The Butchart Gardens are a beautiful sight to see. They also have an impressive list of environmental initiatives. In an average year they recycle 29 metric tonnes of cardboard, 5 metric tons of glass, metal and paper and 57,000 deposit beverage containers. They use low energy and LED fixtures. All incandescent light bulbs are being replaced with compact florescent bulbs. Food waste from the kitchens and coffee grounds are composted. Wood gardening flats are used instead of plastic. The majority of fertilizers are organic based. The Gardens has implemented an Integrated Pest Management program, using biological and environmentally safe methods of pest control. Gift store bags are 100% biodegradable. Vinegar and water are used for most cleaning. The list goes on and on. See their web site for further details. The Butchart Gardens also offers an eco-friendly electric boat tour that explores the history and wildlife of Todd Inlet and the local waters of Brentwood Bay. At the Butchart Gardens Dining Room they prepare their food using fresh local fruit, veggies and meat. They are a member of the Island Chefs' Collaborative (ICC) which supports a network of local farmers.
