The cost of fuel is the biggest single cost in a thermal remediation project, and a lot of the time it is the difference between choosing from thermal desorption or landfilling. A normal thermal desorbers uses about forty liters (11 U.S. gallons) of fuel per ton to heat the soil and volatilize the hydrocarbons and soil moisture, whilst also heating the airstream to convert the hydrocarbons into water and CO2.
For exactly the same throughput, the KM-4 Klean Machine uses only twenty liters (5 U.S. gallons) of fuel per ton. The yearly fuel saving based on 100,000 tons of throughput is 2 million liters (520,000 US gallons).
